From the Archives: Who is Robert E. Walker?

When teams compete on the Robert E. Walker Field at the upper school, a question often asked of the archives is "Who is Robert E. Walker?"

We caught up with Katrina Patchett, Director of Libraries and Archivist, to find out more about the legendary field on the Ransom campus and why it was named after Robert E. Walker.
Mr. Walker was the head of the Ransom School from 1969 to 1974 – the last head before the school's merger with the Everglades School for Girls in 1974-75. He was also an English and history teacher, as well as a football coach. Between 1957 and 1967, he wrote four books about football, copies of which are in the RE archives.

Mr. Walker was a proponent of co-education, believing it provided students with a strong foundation for the future. During his time as head of school, he worked with the administration of the Everglades School for Girls to hold classes and activities on both campuses before the official merger in 1974. Students from Everglades traveled to the Ransom campus to take calculus, physics, and German classes, while Ransom students went to the Everglades campus to participate in studio art and philosophy. Both schools collaborated in the creation of concerts and drama productions, while the faculty exchanged ideas regarding teaching methods, textbooks and classroom materials.

On April 20, 1974, Thomas Wakefield, the President of the Board of Trustees, announced that "as a special gesture of appreciation for Bob Walker's leadership during his tenure as headmaster, and in public recognition of his arduous efforts to expand and strengthen the athletic program at the Ransom School, the new athletic field would be known as the Robert E. Walker Athletic Field."
