Ransom Everglades reimagined its traditional Thanksgiving food drives, eliciting generous donations and community participation despite challenges posed by the pandemic. The upper school community collected seven frozen turkeys, filled four bins with groceries and donated cash gifts of more than $500 for its annual Pack the Pantry food drive for Miami Rescue Mission. Middle schoolers donated some $5000 in grocery gift cards for the Rolle Community Center, and also collected additional funds that will be shared with the annual winter toy drive.
The upper school drive, organized by faculty member Astrid Dalins, took place over two days instead of two weeks (with spaces socially distanced, there was little room to store items), but still generated active participation from teachers, staff and faculty.
RE freshmen donated canned vegetables and paper goods; sophomores brought corn bread mix and cooking oil; juniors collected cranberry sauce and rice; and seniors provided instant potatoes and stuffing mix. Many contributed checks or gift cards and some donated frozen turkeys. Students loaded items directly on the Miami Rescue Mission truck on the morning of November 18.
Middle school students, meanwhile, brought in grocery gift cards through their advisories to support Coconut Grove families with ties to the Rolle Community Center.
