First wave of Outward Bound departs
Nearly 40 freshmen departed Ransom Everglades on January 10 for the start of their five-day, four-night Outward Bound adventure in the Ten Thousand Islands, marking a return of the tradition that dates back more than 30 years. In deference to COVID-19, freshmen are traveling in four groups – instead of two – this year, and each student must test negative on a rapid COVID-19 test the morning of departure to participate in the canoeing and camping trip in the Everglades. No students tested positive in the January 10 testing.
Since the start of the 2021-22 school year, RE freshmen have learned to use a compass, plot a trip and paddle a canoe during ninth-grade physical education under the direction of Erica Bartos, the RE Maritime Curriculum Director and Dockmaster. Once they arrive in the Everglades, they will be split into groups and depart from different outposts in the Ten Thousand Islands, all making their way to base camp.
During their journeys, they will navigate, set up and break down camp, cook and manage other elements of the trip. The first group returns Friday.
Wave II departs January 18; Wave III, January 31; and Wave IV, February 18.
Sophomores who missed out on the annual trek last year because of COVID-19 will have the chance to participate in a special outdoor excursion in the spring to North Carolina.
