Welcome to Ransom Everglades School, a school that has blended tradition and progressive ideas for more than 115 years.
Throughout our history, students have developed the experiences, skills and knowledge to guide them through meaningful lives in a changing world. Since the beginning, Ransom Everglades has sought to instill an appreciation for the environment, global perspectives, empathy, cultural competencies and the ability to persevere. A curriculum that includes sailing on Biscayne Bay, a student body with students from around the Americas and world, and a well-traveled faculty have been hallmarks at Ransom Everglades.
Three decades before Harkness tables arrived at Exeter, Paul Ransom instructed students in the Pagoda through the close readings of texts and, in 1955, Marie and Ed Swenson opened the Everglades School to students of all backgrounds. Student-centered, discussion-based learning built on a pedagogy of inquiry still characterizes Ransom Everglades, whether around tables where literature and historical texts are analyzed or in computer and physics labs where students define problems and create solutions.
The rigor embedded in the curriculum not only results in high numbers of Advanced Placement Scholars and National Merit Finalists, but it also inspires students who build apps, create business plans, design original lab experiments and publish their research. A student population of diverse backgrounds; educational travel opportunities outside the United States; student-led organizations like the Diversity Council and Women Empowered; and ongoing efforts to increase the diversity of perspectives represented in the study body and on the faculty continue to blend tradition and cutting-edge thinking at Ransom Everglades.
