John A. King, Jr., Associate Head of School

John King is Associate Head of School and a faculty member in the History and Social Sciences department. Prior to coming to Ransom Everglades 21 years ago, he was Assistant Professor of History at Belmont University. At Ransom Everglades, he has held many positions, all the while teaching AP US History, and creating and teaching the AP World History, Latin American Studies Honors, and philosophy honors courses. Dr. King has been the Senior Class Academic Dean, the Senior Class Sponsor, Associate Director of College Counseling, and has coached several teams and served as a guest conductor in the performing arts department. Dr. King has also served as the Accreditation Coordinator for RE’s last two cycles of self-study and reaccreditation. He has served on several committees, including the Technology Committee and the Search Committee for the Head of School.

A Miami native, Dr. King earned a bachelor of arts with high honors in history and political science, and a master's degree in history from Emory University. He completed a PhD in history, with concentrations on Latin America and US Foreign Policy, at Vanderbilt University. He is the author of The President’s Position, Debating the Issues: The Cold War Presidents, several journal articles and entries for historical encyclopedias, and teachers materials to accompany W.W. Norton’s leading US History textbook, Give Me Liberty!, and has been Editor in Chief of the high school US History module for Milestone Documents. A Reader for the AP US History exam for nearly two decades, Dr. King was part of several College Board/ETS focus groups that worked on the recent redesign of the AP US History program.  Dr. King contributes to the independent school community by serving as an SAIS Visiting Team Chair. Dr. King was instrumental in the establishment of TEDxCoconutGrove as a founding member of the Steering Committee, and in his free time enjoys scuba diving, being a Miami Dolphins season ticket holder, and playing any one of a number of musical instruments.

Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida.
