Coed Middle School Varsity Crew Competes at Shake-An-Erg

Saturday January 26th saw a large portion for the Miami rowing community as well as some competitors from farther afield come together to race rowing machines and in support of the hosts, Shake-A-Leg Miami in the 1st annual Shake An Erg Competition.

Traditionally, indoor ergometer competitions are staple of more northerly climes where ice and water conditions force many rowers and programs off the water for the winter. While we here in Miami do not face those challenges, the opportunity to test individual rowers against the clock for personal bests and against other rowers doing the same thing is a very useful exercise in keeping the competitive juices flowing at this time of year. Middle school rowers competed over a distance of 1500 meters, upper school rowers competed over a distance of 2000 meters and there were relays of 4 rowers each, competing over 2000 meters total for the middle school boys and girls and the upper school boys to end the day.

Ransom Everglades Crew had nearly the entire middle school squad competing as well as a small contingent from the upper school squad in action. Among many personal best times, the competitive highlights were:
  • Amelia Fox ’22 took home 1st and the Gold Medal in the High School Girls event
  • The Middle School Girls relay took home 2nd place and the Silver Medal
  • The Middle School Boys relay took home 3rd Place and the Bronze Medal

Other notable performances were:
  • Gaby Martinez ’24 placing 7th, highest among RE rowers in the 7-8th Grade Girls event
  • Thomas Segrera ’23 placing 5th, highest among RE rowers in the 7th-8th Grade Boys event
  • Claudia O’Sullivan ’21 placing 10th,highest among RE rowers in the High School Girls Lwt event
  • Julien Bacon ’20 placing 37th, highest among RE rowers in the High School Boys Lwt event
