Eighth grader gets second at spelling bee

Liv Steinhardt '23 won second place in the 79th Annual Miami Herald Spelling Bee at the University of Miami's Donna Shalala Student Center on Feb. 19, distinguishing herself in a field of 166 spellers from Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Steinhardt prepared for the bee under English Department Coordinator Jody Salzinger.
The competition began with a written test – 30 words to spell and 10 vocabulary questions. All of the spellers then went on stage to spell a word. The scores were tallied and the group was whittled down to the top 15. Fourteen rounds later, Steinhardt finished second to Rodrigo Medinilla of Pinecrest Preparatory Middle High. Steinhardt was accompanied to the bee by her mother Melissa Krinzman '86.
