Parkland victim's father visits RE
Fred Guttenberg, the father of Parkland shooting victim Jaime Guttenberg, gave an emotional address to the Upper School student body on March 7, sharing his painful journey from bereaved father to gun violence activist. Guttenberg, invited to RE by the Students Against Gun Violence club, told students they had the power to make a difference and urged them to fight for change.
Guttenberg reflected on Feb. 14, 2018, the day 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Fla., were killed in a shooting rampage, and shared details of the painful aftermath for his family. He also took questions from students, who sought his advice on how to make their voices heard, how to push for legislative change and how to deal with opposition.
His visit was arranged by members of SAGV, which is led by president Abby Aldrich '20, vice president Maya Rosen '21, secretary Emma Rosenthal '21 and chair of events Zara Shapiro '21.
