Sailors earn national championship bid

The varsity sailing team finished second in the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association District Team Race Championships in Tampa on April 6-7, winning a qualifying spot for the Toby Baker Trophy Team Race National Championships in Portland, Maine, in May. Skippers Lachlain McGranahan '20Javier Garcon '21 and Liam O'Keefe '21 led RE's sailors, who were victorious in the last race of the day.
RE finished just behind the Antilles School and topped Immaculata La Salle High (third), H.B. Plant High of Tampa (fourth) in the field of eight schools. Also joining in the victory were crew members: Adam Kaplan '21, Louis LaFontisee '21, Hannah Bast '21, Lucas Vianna '21 and Claire Holzman '21. Bernat Miro '19 was absent because of injury and Stephan Baker '21 missed because of illness.

The sailing team was led by coach Joe Logan.

In other news, Baker finished first with teammate Oliver Duncan in a major national event; the Feb. 14-16 qualifying event in Miami for the 2019 Youth World Sailing Championships in Gdynia, Poland. Baker was the silver medalist in the 2018 Optimist World Sailing Championships in Italy.
