Swimming doubles up on district titles

Ransom Everglades' girls' swim team upped its streak of district dominance to 14 years and RE's boys' team earned its sixth straight title at the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 1A District 12 championships in Islamorada Oct. 22. Eleven RE swimmers earned automatic bids to the regional championships with first- or second-place finishes.
Magnus Kron '21 led the Raiders with three gold medals, including two individual medals, and one silver. He won the boys'  200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 52.95 seconds) and 100 free (51.48), and also claimed a gold medal in the 200 free relay (1:37.03) with Nico Valls '20, Victor Perez '23 and Alex Freedline '20. That group teamed up again to win the silver in the 400 free.

Freedline also won an indvidual gold medal, finishing first in the boys' 200 individual medley (2:13.86). The girls' 200 free relay team won the other RE gold as Sophie G '22, Lauren Heller '22, Georgia Murphy '20 and Alexa Hommen '22 finished in 1:43.57.

The Raiders scored second-place finishes in the girls' 200 medley relay (Mattie Barfield '21, Meredith Hutchinson '20, Sabrina Shipley '22 and Sophie G '22); the girls' 100 fly (Sophie G); the girls' 400 free relay (Sophie G, Heller, Murphy and Hommen).

Sophie G led the girls with her gold medal and three silvers.

The RE girls topped a field of eight teams with a total of 443 points. Cutler Bay Academy of Advanced Studies finished second with 401 and the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart finished third with 344. The boys earned 426 points to top Cutler Bay Academy of Advanced Studies (402) and Riviera Preparatory School (276) in the nine-team field. The teams were led by head coach Kyle Hastings, also the director of aquatics at RE.

All three of RE's girls' relay teams performed well enough at the regional championships on Nov. 1 to advance to the FHSAA Swimming and Diving State Championship on Nov. 9 in Stuart. Sophie G also advanced in the 100 fly.
