RE musicians win national, state recognition

Connor Munroe '21 achieved two national-level and two state-level recognitions in November that highlighted an award-winning stretch for RE musicians. Ian Barnett '23 achieved national distinction when his full orchestral composition was named a winner in the National Young Composer's Challenge Competition.
Barnett's "Assembly of Summer Voices" will be performed by professional members of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, on April 19, 2020.

Munroe, a tenor saxophonist and clarinetist, performed with the National Jazz Band in Orlando; earned recognition as a National YoungArts Winner in Jazz; qualified for the Florida Bandmasters Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival; and was named to the Florida All-State Jazz Band for the fifth straight year – an RE record.

Munroe performed in Orlando Nov. 8 for the National Association for Musician Education National Jazz Band under the direction of Todd Stoll from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. He will also represent RE as a member of the All-State Jazz Band in Tampa in January and at the FBA festival in March 2020.

He will be joined in Tampa by violinist Eva Gonzalez-Whitehouse '22, who was named to the Florida All-State Honors Orchestra for the second consecutive year, and two middle schoolers: Evelyn Yu '24, who was named to the Middle School All-State Orchestra, and Miguel Arango '24, who was named to the Middle School Honor Band.

Gonzalez-Whitehouse is a student of Scott O'Donnell; Yu, a student of Jessica Carrasquillo; Arango and the other middle school band honorees, students of Cathi Leibinger; and Munroe and the other upper school band honorees, students of Jon Hamm. RE staff accompanists Rosa Scott and Dr. Marion Scott provided piano accompaniment for RE’s soloists.

Munroe will be joined at the FBA festival by eight fellow musicians: oboe soloist Julien Bacon '20, french hornist Leah Maduro '23, pianist Max Swietelsky '21, pianist Max Vallone '22, percussionist Liam Malloy '20, trombonist Shuli Rosenfeld '21, alto saxophonist Daniel Fisher '21, and string bassist Andres Soto '21.

In other news, 10 Ransom Everglades Middle School Band students attended the Florida Bandmasters Association District 20 Solo/Ensemble Music Performance Assessment held at Westwood Christian School in November. There were ten solo performances and one duet performance, earning nine superior ratings and two excellent ratings.
