Hundreds of grandparents enjoy RE

Ransom Everglades grandparents showed up in happy, loving droves for Grandparents Days Feb. 12 at the middle school and Feb. 13 at the upper school. More than 500 grandparents descended on one or both campuses, enjoying a light breakfast with other attendees, hearing from school leaders and then attending classes with their grandchildren.

RE Board Chair Andy Ansin ’81 and Head of School Penny Townsend welcomed nearly 350 grandparents to the middle school, 250 to the upper school as well as the 85 who visited both campuses. Grandparents Day Co-Chair Suzie Sayfie also offered introductory remarks, sharing the pleasure at being an RE grandparent after having sent four daughters to Ransom Everglades.

“Now the joy is even greater, seeing our children’s children walk the same halls as their parents,” she said. “… They are so fortunate to be mentored by the talented and passionate faculty here at Ransom Everglades School – many of whom also taught our daughters.”

Townsend told grandparents that the school’s values remain rooted in founder Paul Ransom’s pledge that Ransom Everglades would produce graduates who leave the world better than they find it, but yet the school has grown. “This school has come along with Miami,” she said. “We really are the best school in Miami, and an important institution … Ransom Everglades shows that there is real intellectualism and academic prowess in Miami.”

Andy Ansin, whose mother Toby Ansin served as a Grandparents Day Co-Chair, cheered those in attendance at both events.

“In addition to being proud of your grandchildren today, you should be proud of yourselves,” he said. “You’ve passed down a lot of things to your grandchildren, and it gives them a terrific opportunity to succeed.”
