Suzette Fandino writes: "Living through the coronavirus pandemic has been a surreal experience. Life changed drastically overnight. Many of us had never experienced anything quite like this in our lifetime. I suppose every generation is given a challenge, perhaps it is a way to test us, to see what we are made of. The 20th century had the Greatest Generation who lived through the war. Now we are faced with the coronavirus.
Despite the fear, inconvenience, disruptions and tragedy it has caused, we as a community and a country have risen to the challenge. Everywhere we look, we see the ingenuity, creativity, organization and compassion of our people.
We see it in American companies retooling their operations to manufacture much-needed masks, PPE and other essential supplies. We see it in the awesome organization and coordination of federal, state and local governments who have taken the necessary steps to keep their citizens safe. We see it in the scientists and pharmaceutical companies who are racing to find treatments, cures and vaccines at a record breaking pace. We see it in the courage and perseverance of our healthcare professionals and first responders who put their lives on the line and work tirelessly to save our people. They are the true heroes of today.
We see it in our very own RE community: From the school’s administration whose foresight and meticulous planning allowed education to continue virtually to the teachers who continued with their lesson plans and made it fun and interesting for the kids. We didn’t miss a step.
Our RE community has also lived up to Paul Ransom’s mission that we are “in the world not so much for what we can get out of it as for what we can put into it” by pulling together to help those in need in our community. RE parents organized fund drives to collect money to buy masks for local hospital workers. We supported our local restaurants by buying meals and then showing our appreciation to hospital staff by treating them to lunch. We organized blood drives. We delivered food to the less fortunate in our community. RE parents didn’t even let the virus spoil our celebrations and fun by organizing drive-by birthday parties where we could celebrate but still observe social distancing.
It truly is a testament to the human spirit how our community has produced so much good from such a challenging situation. The coronavirus has not defeated us. Instead it has united us and reminded us of what is truly important in our lives: our families, our friends and our community.
As we head in to the summer and we begin to see a light at the end of this coronavirus tunnel, I am grateful and proud to be part of such an amazing community, and I look with confidence to the future knowing that we can meet any challenge the future may bring."
