We plan to offer opportunities for small-group sports training and instruction beginning August 10, which will allow fall athletes to begin preparations for their seasons in a safe environment. Upper school student-athletes will receive information on how to sign up for those optional sessions through our coaches in the coming week.
Our fall plans are based on the guidance of medical professionals and advisory groups. We hope members of our community will understand the inherent differences between sports in terms of assessing risk related to COVID-19. The Sports Medicine Advisory Committee advised heightened caution with respect to volleyball and football because the former takes place indoors; the latter involves contact; and neither can effectively incorporate social distancing.
We remain committed to providing meaningful and structured sport-specific activity and, if possible, creative competitive opportunities for all of our student-athletes. We expect our golfers will return to competition with social distancing rules in place, and we are exploring the possibility of swim competitions in which schools race virtually, each competing in its own pool, and cross-country races with staggered start times. More information will be provided when it is available. All of our plans, of course, will be dictated by the path of the virus and are subject to change.
Students who have not previously participated in their fall sport of interest at RE and would like to receive communications regarding training or practices for cross country, golf, swimming, volleyball, football, sailing or crew should
email me here or reply to this email. Students who are not comfortable participating in our programs at the scheduled start time will be allowed to join a team or try out at a later date if they communicate those intentions to their coach and me in advance.
Student-athletes who come to campus will be required to wear masks until they begin their training, follow social distancing rules and submit to daily health screenings. Coaches will share details of the required screenings and protocols.
Details about middle school sports will be shared as in the past – after the fall semester gets underway.
As a reminder, student-athletes must complete the FHSAA clearance process that is outlined
here. Students may not begin small-group workouts or fall practices until they are cleared by the FHSAA.
Thank you for your attention to this email. You can expect future communications through your coaches.
And, as you heard during the REopening Meeting last week, Head of School Penny Townsend will communicate by August 4 whether the school will reopen virtually or on campus on August 24.
