Friday Night Fun and Frights
RE’s middle school drama students brought the golden age of radio to the school community through "Friday Night Fun and Frights," audio performances that aired “live” on Fridays this fall. The performances were devised to bring drama students together outside of school, engage their imaginations, and connect with the larger RE community through virtual theater.
RE Middle School drama teacher Gina Montet, a fan of shows like “Suspense!” and “Lights Out … Everybody!” recognized that radio dramas fit perfectly into pandemic life, bringing easy entertainment without additional screen time. The livestreamed events, which concluded October 23, also allowed for wide participation.
Auditions were held through video submissions in late August and early September. All rehearsals and performances were held virtually after school. Upper school technical theater students and faculty member Quincy Knowles helped collect and create many of the sound effects used for the show.
This is the second time REMS Drama has visited the golden era of radio: the first was performing "Radio Craze" back in 2016, which was staged with live sound effects artists.
