Bunt Play -2  Runner on 2nd or Runners on 1st & 2nd

Responsibilities:
  • 3rd baseman covers 3rd
  • Ss covers 2nd
  • 2nd baseman covers 1st
  • 1st baseman charges
  • Pitcher covers 3rd base side
  • Catcher covers front of plate
  • RF backs up throw to 1st
  • CF backs up throw to 2nd
  • LF backs up throw to 3rd

Defensive Design:
  • Lead Runner Out

Option Two:
  • Get out at 1st

Decision Number One:
  • If ball bunted hard to first baseman and it is fielded cleanly take a shot at the lead out.
  • Fielder cannot hesitate with his decision
Decision Two:
  • If the ball is bunted softly the fielder must take the out at first base
  • If the fielder hesitates with his decision he must take the out at first base
  • If the fielder bobbles the ball he must take the out at first base
The fielder should listen for his team to call the base to throw to.  Usually the catcher will make the call.

Bunt Play 3- Pick off at 2nd
• 2B breaks to the bag, slapping his mitt.
• 2B breaks back to fielding position
• IF base runner takes an additional lead - SS creeps toward the bag.
• Catcher gives "Fire" sign to pitcher.

• Pitcher turns and fires to the bag.  SS takes the throw and tags the runner out.

• 2B breaks to back up the throw.

• CF crashes in to back up the throw.

Bunt Play 4-   Wheel play
• Ideally the hitter will try to lay the bunt down the 3rd base side to force the 3rd baseman off the bag, freeing up the backside for the runner on second to advance.

• The shortstop must keep the runner at second close before the play even starts.  SS must be chatting in the runner's ear to let him know he is there.
• The closer the runner is to second, the easier he is to double up.
• Shortstop rotates INFRONT of the runner, obstructing his view.

• This is the moment both 1st and 3rd basemen begin to break toward home ready to field the bunt.

• Pitcher sees the runner is "missing" and delivers the pitch.  This delay by the runner at second will hold him there a split second longer.

• 2B begins to break to cover First
• Center Field comes in to cover 2B
