Band students entertain virtually

Ransom Everglades upper school band students faced challenges throughout 2021-22. Music students assembled for classes on the outdoor patio in front of the Lewis Family Auditorium, sitting in socially distanced chairs as faculty member Jon Hamm directed – his music books and papers often balanced on the trash can that stood in middle of the impromptu performance hall. Students at home joined virtually.

The great progress the student musicians made, despite the circumstances, was evident in the RE Band Virtual Concert that aired via livestream on April 27. You can watch it here.
Hamm opened the event, introducing a night of music that had everything except the customary ovations.  The RE Symphonic Band led off, followed by the Guitar Ensemble, which played "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley with Joelle Pena ’22 on vocals. The event featured a record four jazz combos – a testament to the depth of the program and the success of the RE Combo, the school’s top combo. Because of the absence of several remote students, Hamm accompanied some of the performances, including the RE Combo's "My Romance" by Richard Rogers/Lorenz Hart.

The concert, which was recorded over several days to avoid large gatherings of student musicians, concluded with virtual congratulations to the four students – Connor Munroe ’21, Adam Chopp ’22, Max Vallone ’22 and Isabel Chong ’24 – who were accepted into the National Jazz Festival in May. It also recognized french hornist Leah Maduro ‘23, who earned her straight A’s and an overall rating of Superior at this year's Florida Bandmasters Association State Solo Music Performance Assessment.
