Members of the Ransom Everglades Class of 2021 spent their last day on campus as seniors laying their personalized bricks, savoring ice cream confections, collecting their yearbooks and enjoying a final jump in the Ansin Pool. The Senior Send-off event on March 20, a day before the 2021 Commencement, was different than the traditional Sunday gathering with family members, but it offered no shortage of celebratory moments.
The event included an in-person – for seniors only – yearbook assembly. During the assembly, which was livestreamed from the Lewis Family Auditorium to the rest of the upper school, Head of School Penny Townsend shared her traditional “Keepers of the Flame" awards, this year naming 10 seniors – Maddie Bagnall '21, Gori Spillis '21, Elliot Sable '21, Megan Diston '21, Nicolas Stone Perez '21, Isabella Henriquez '21, James Srebnick '21, Xander Lake '21, Elanah Arnold '21 and Maya Rego '21 – "Keepers of the Masks." Each received a framed RE mask.
Trustee and alumnus Agustin “Konky” Arellano '90 spoke to the Class of 2021, inviting students to remain connected as alumni and offering them words of encouragement as they departed RE. He also announced the Class of 2021 Class Agents: Rachel Bienstock '21, Georgia Crosby '21, Liza Dill '21, Alex Dray '21, Bruce Leight '21, Yuhan Liu '21 and Hannah Waibel '21.
The seniors gathered a day later at the Watsco Center at the University of Miami for commencement.
During the yearbook assembly, yearbook editors Elanah Arnold '21 and Maya Rego '21 dedicated the yearbook jointly to Tammy Valdez Anthon and Chinese instructor Youming Che, both of whom passed away this past year. Rego described Anthon, a security guard well-known for her smiling presence at the front of the upper school, as "a beloved member of the RE community for over 20 years." She said Che "had the ability to make anyone feel welcome and at ease in and out of the classroom."
