MS strings back at Swenson Hall

Ransom Everglades middle school strings students donned masks – masquerade and COVID-19 – for a happy milestone: the school’s first in-theater, evening performance in 19 months. The October 8 orchestra event called “Masquerade Ball” showcased the beginning, intermediate and advanced/chamber orchestras in front of delighted family members, friends, administration and faculty members at Swenson Hall.

Strings teachers Jessica Carrasquillo and Scott O’Donnell introduced their students to start the evening, and archivist Katrina Patchett served as a behind-the-scenes master of ceremonies. The Beginning Orchestra played two pieces composed by O’Donnell: “Peace” and “Suite for Strings”; both, he said, offered a four-part harmony designed to teach them to listen to each other and play together.

The Intermediate Orchestra performed “The Abandoned Funhouse” and “The Blue Danube Waltz,” and the Advanced/Chamber Orchestra played “Barcarolle” and “Cavatina.”

The Intermediate/Advanced/Chamber performed “Finlandia” to conclude the showcase.
