Teamwork nets two titles for RE swimming

Swim meets consist mostly of individual events, yet it was teamwork that handed district titles to the Ransom Everglades swim teams at the Ansin Aquatic Center on October 20. Gold-medal victories in the 200-yard freestyle relays and silver medals in a trio of other relays propelled the girls to their 16th straight Florida High School Athletic Association 1A District 12 title and the boys to their eighth in a row.
Coren O’Brien ’23, Victor Perez ’23, Nohan Gomez ’25 and Stephan Baker ’22 led the boys’ 200 free relay team, touching the wall in 1 minute, 34.69 seconds; and Sabrina Shipley ’22, Lauren Heller ’22, Dylan Stone ’22 and Alexa Hommen ’22 led the girls’ team, finishing in 1:44.47.

RE earned silvers in the following relays: the girls’ 200 medley relay (Heller, Kiera Rampersad ’25, Shipley and Stone; 1:54.70); the girls’ 400 free relay (Rampersad, Heller, Stone and Hommen; 3:47.59) and the boys’ 400 free relay (Gomez, Perez, Geronimo Carom ’22 and Baker; 3:32.14).

RE’s boys scored 409 points to edge second-place Cutler Bay Academy of Advanced Studies, which tallied 390, and Riviera Prep secured 245 in the field of 10 teams. The girls’ total of 390 topped the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart (324) and Cutler Bay Academy (314) in the field of nine. The teams are coached by RE Aquatics Director Kyle Hastings.

Rampersad led the Raiders individually, earning a gold in the 100 fly (58.65 seconds) and a silver in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.49). Hommen scored a silver medal in the 50 free (25.53) and a bronze in the 100 free (55.96). Baker earned bronze medals in the 50 free (23.20) and 100 free (52.27). Shipley claimed a silver in the 100 fly (1:02.17); Gomez got the bronze in the 500 freestyle (5:04.38); and Perez claimed the bronze in the 200 free (1:58.03).

The top two finishers in each event automatically advanced to the regional championships on October 29. Rampersad led the RE at that event, helping the Raiders to advance to the state championship meet in two relays (the 200 medley and 200 freestyle) and the 100 butterfly.

Other top finishes for the Raiders at districts: Paolo Rebessi ’23 and Jake Perdigon ’24 finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle; O’Brien got fifth in the 50 free; Gomez claimed fifth in the 100 fly; Heller got fifth in the 100 freestyle; Perez earned fourth in the 100 free; Stone got fourth in the 500 freestyle; Rebessi got fifth in the boys’ 500 free; Riley Sepin ’25 got fifth in the 100 backstroke; O’Brien got fifth in the 100 backstroke; and O’Brien, Roger Garcia-Caceras ’23, Arjun Badwal ’23 and Carom finished fourth in the 200 medley relay.
