Math team scores top finishes

In its first competition of the 2021-22 season, RE's math team scored three top-five team finishes as one senior – Alex Van Lidth '22 – claimed a ninth place in the calculus individual competition at the FAU-Davie Campus Regional on January 29.
 
The calculus team of Van Lidth, Nikhil Kumar '22, Dylan Stone '22 and Sofia Dimitra Paraoulaki de Miranda '23 earned fifth place, and RE's precalculus team of Solon Sun '25, Andrew Gedde '25, Hudson Kaplan '25 and Sirja Joeveer '25 also placed fifth.

The interschool team of Victoria Paraoulaki de Miranda '24, Alexis Tie-Shue '23, Arjun Badwal '23, Sabrina Shipley '22, Elliot Gross '24, Erick Gross '24, Maya Shaked '24, Kerryn Xu '22, Amelia Fox '22, and Chloe Alfonso '24 earned fourth place.
 
In other news, Van Lidth and Sun each finished in the top five percent of test takers on the American Mathematics Competitions exams administered online in November, advancing to the next round of a slate of competitions that lead ultimately to the International Mathematics Olympiad. Van Lidth, who advanced for the third straight year, took the AMC 12 and Sun, who received a certificate of achievement for his high scores, took the AMC 10. 

Both exams have require students to answer 25 questions in 75 minutes The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below, and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. 

Students who didn't advance but were recognized as top scorers at RE: Kumar, Sofia Dimitra Paraoulaki de Miranda and Shipley (AMC 12) and Joshua Khohayting '28, Victoria Paraoulaki de Miranda and Shaked (AMC 10).

Next up for Van Lidth and Sun is the American Invitational Mathematics Examination in mid-February.
