Students win visual arts and creative writing recognition
Three RE students – Taylor Smith '25, Ethan Sullivan '25 and Olivia Gomez '27 – received top honors at prestigious Junior Orange Bowl art competitions, headlining a strong showing by Ransom Everglades students at simultaneous arts and photography events March 11 at Westchester Regional Library as well as at others throughout the county. In all, more than 20 RE art students from the middle and upper schools earned recognition.
Ransom Everglades photography students under Matt Stock won 40 percent of the total awards including the Judges' Choice for best overall photograph at the 36th Annual Junior Orange Bowl Photography Competition. Taylor Smith '25 claimed the judges' choice award as well as first-, second- and third-place honors. Ethan Sullivan '25 won a first- and third-place; Bea Ribadeneira '23 won second place; and Luke Jaffee '26 won third place and honorable mention.
Ransom Everglades students also swept the top three places and earned six of the 10 finalist awards in 35th Annual Creative Writing Contest held by the Junior Orange Bowl and South Florida Writers Association. Olivia Gomez '27 earned first place for "A Change for the Worst," as Noa Garcia '27 scored second for "The Monster," and Lucas Lafosse-Marin '27 earned third place for "Death from Above." The other finalists under English teacher Jody Salzinger and Flavia Araripe: Alexa Charouhis '27 for "From My Perspective"; Isabel Adler '27 for "Foust Flames"; and Mateo Bernal '27 for "Turn to Black."

In other news, student artists – Alex Ansin '27, Valentina Capote '26, Isla Dua '27, Thomas Karam-Silva '27, Zoe Weber '27, Isaac Weinberg '27 and Radha Willig '28 – had their artwork accepted into the Teen Takeover art exhibition that took place from March 16-26 at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach. Faculty member Elsa Muñoz oversaw the middle school entries.
Additionally, Ethan Sullivan '25 and Valentina Capote '26 won awards in the 2023 Key Biscayne Lion's Club high school photography contest. Ethan claimed second overall and Valentina received an honorable mention.
Also, a number of RE students' works have just been selected for the annual Beaux Arts Student Artist Showcase at the University of Miami Lowe Museum of Art. The honorees include Taylor Smith '25 and
Vlad Ponomarenko '25 (photography), student artists Alex Ansin '27, Misha Gowda '28, Annabella Ciocca '28 and Alejandra de Lorenzi '27 – and possibly additional RE students. Awards will be announced on April 27 at 6 p.m. and RE will share more on the showcase at that time.
