Sophomores participate in writing retreats along the bay

Writing retreats to nearby Island C and the shoreline of The Barnacle Historic State Park helped bring to life the study of poetry and transcendentalism for Ransom Everglades' 10th-grade English students. Inspired by the poems of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson and the transcendental texts of Emerson and Thoreau, the sophomore students traveled by foot or boat to find quiet spaces to read, reflect and compose their own poetry.
The mini-field trips are an annual part of RE's Advanced American Studies and American Literary Movements courses under RE Humanities Department faculty Corinne Rhyner, Matthew Helmers, Elizabeth Cornick and John Ermer. The goal of the outings is for students to put their learning into practice, retreating into nature to examine their own relationships to the natural world and contemplate and utilize the inspiration they find in a natural setting.

Meanwhile, photography students under faculty member Matt Stock took their cameras out to the bay for waterfront photography under Stock's direction in October. The experiential learning exercises are essential to student life at Ransom Everglades.
