Another state title for senior runner
David "Chuli" Serra '24 won the cross country state championship on Nov. 17, topping the second-place finisher from the Bolles School in Jacksonville by just over two seconds. Serra's finish in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2A boys' 5,000 meters in 15 minutes and 19.5 seconds gave him his third individual state championship in the last six months – he also claimed track and field state titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 last May. Serra headlined a great performance in Tallahassee by the Raiders' boys' and girls' teams, both of which earned sixth place.
Serra's performance put the finishing touches on a season in which he won the district and regional championships with ease and committed to continuing his running career at Wake Forest University next fall. As a junior at last year's cross country state championship, he finished second. The boys' team, which also included George Wood-Leness '24, Nelson Manstein '26, Lucas Schleifer 26, Ethan Sullivan '25, Alexander Azqueta '24 and Nolan Wu '24, had one of its best seasons ever under coach Don Kappelman.
The girls' team under coaches Mike Becker and Maggie Berry was powered by the 19th place finish of Sophia Linfield '26. The team included Patricia Drulard '24, Alexandra Russoniello '26, Julieta Salvat '27, Anna Lavernia '25, Sofia Rua '24 and Sirja Joeveer '25.
