Prominent banker talks about financial industry ethics with students

Ransom Everglades students explored ethical decision making in banking, real estate and lending during a special assembly and roundtable discussion with prominent banker Lance Drummond. The latest speaker in the Holzman Center of Applied Ethics Speaker Series at RE, Drummond answered questions from students and Holzman Center Director John A. King, Jr., who joined him on the Lewis Family Auditorium stage for the opening assembly with upper school students.
Drummond has served in senior management roles at Eastman Kodak, Fiserv, TD Canada Trust, Bank of America and on a number of corporate boards, including Freddie Mac, the federal mortgage lender. He is the founder of Dreamseeds, a children’s performing arts program, and was a recipient of the Rochester (N.Y.) Area Community Foundation Award, and Rochester Mayor's Unsung Heroes Award. He received the University of Rochester Simon Business School Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2005.

During his time at RE, he provided a behind-the-scenes look at financial decision-making and addressed various ethical questions. He talked about the importance of understanding the mindset and plight of stakeholders, and of addressing problems early.

He took questions from two students in the audience, and then proceeded to the Ransom Cottage where he participated in the first "Speaking of Ethics" roundtable in a partnership with the student-run REal Estate Club, examining the topic: Ethical Issues in Real Estate and Banking. The discussion centered on a real-world case study that examined the ethical tensions between financial stability, public responsibility and housing as a social good.
