From the Desk of the Head of School: Beyond the headlines, Spear’s recognizes RE for ‘honour and integrity’

Many in our community were proud to learn that Ransom Everglades once again earned a place among the top 10 private schools in North America in the annual Spear’s School Index. The real joy came not in the headline, but rather in the details. When announcing the news last month, the British magazine called RE a school “to know” and noted that our focus was “honour and integrity,” commenting that Ransom Everglades “strives to develop students who pride themselves on their academic rigour alongside their morals.”
Although we are pleased to make such a prestigious list for the third straight year, we are even more thrilled at the attributes Spear’s saw fit to highlight. Current students and RE alumni know just how much Paul Ransom’s vision of producing ethical leaders has shaped our school and students. Since the earliest days more than 120 years ago, we have graduated alumni who earnestly strive to leave the world better than they find it. It’s gratifying that something so central to our identity, so critical to our institution’s DNA and our students’ growth, has helped our school achieve international recognition.

Spear’s noted that our “students are taught to be independent thinkers, capable of collaborating with others but confident enough to defend their own ideas.” This is something that’s always been the case, but never been more true than it is now. As we create an increased number of  opportunities for our students to engage in research, leadership and service – through our Pathways Scholars program, our AI Innovation Fellowships and Dan Leslie Bowden in the Humanities Fellowships, and our eighth-grade Third Class Capstone – we are teaching them to stand up for what they believe in while also knowing the best ideas are formulated and honed by consensus, and the most effective projects perfected with thoughtful mentorship and collaboration.

We want our students to understand what leadership looks like: It is infused with humility, inspired by kindness and characterized by honor. This is how students leave the world better than they find it, and this aspiration is what makes a Ransom Everglades education transformational.

As we look toward the future, we do so with a sense of humility and purpose. We are proud to be recognized on the global stage, but we are more proud of what that recognition celebrates: an educational community that never separates intellect from character. At Ransom Everglades, we aren't just preparing students for the next chapter of their education; we are preparing them for a lifetime of honorable influence.
