RE students claim awards at Poetry Night at the Barnacle

Four Ransom Everglades students were among 16 finalists selected to read their poems at the annual Poetry Night at the Barnacle, which drew nearly 400 submissions from across South Florida in April 12. At the conclusion of the celebration of poetry at the Barnacle Historic State Park, Alexandra Brandrick-Morris ’29 earned second place for her poem “Ode to the Junk Drawer,” and Ella Balestra ’27 took third place for “The Pause Before the Tide.” Victoria de Vera ’27 (“I Once Knew a Witch”) and Patrick Keedy Brown ’26 (“Little Gods”), who was not in attendance, earned top-16 recognition.
The poems of 13 additional Ransom Everglades students were showcased on the grounds of the park. Poems ranked in the top 48 of submissions were displayed, and other featured poems were included in a binder. RE's participation in the poetry contest and evening reading represents a key part of a slate of activities directed by English teacher Corinne Rhyner that pay homage to National Poetry Month.

The poetry night was emceed by former RE parent Marc Stone and featured guest appearances by acclaimed poets Richard Blanco and Denise Duhamel – who participated in selecting the finalists and winners – and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. About 250 people attended.
