From the Desk of the Head of School: Taking The RE Way into the summer

For more than 120 years, RE has provided a world-class education grounded in service and ethical leadership. Since our earliest days, our students have pledged to be part of what Paul Ransom called the “third class” of people – those who leave the world better than they find it.

Leaving the world better than they found it isn’t something our students start doing after graduation. It’s a goal they chase every single day. As we wrapped up the school year, I met with our upper school students to wish them a wonderful summer. I also reminded them that for our core values, there is no summer vacation.
That was the essence of my end-of-year message. Living out The RE Way – Honor & Excellence, Support & Community, Diversity & Inclusion, Joy & Wellbeing, Service & Outreach – doesn’t end when classes conclude. It’s a way of life – in fact, it’s an excellent way of living. We want our students to see our values not as burdensome tasks but as helpful guideposts that give them the confidence to make principled, sound decisions wherever they go.

We want them to understand that reliance on an ethical compass will help them build meaningful and fulfilling lives. We often say at RE that you cannot have excellence without honor. I would add that you cannot have true happiness without it, either. There is nothing more rewarding than watching our students embrace an approach to life that brings them both success and genuine satisfaction. That is my wish for them – and you – in the coming weeks.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer!
