Student-scientists experience real-world research through the Young REsearchers Program

Student-scientists in Ransom Everglades' Young REsearchers Program (YREP) spent the summer carrying out field research and lab work in a university-style research environment at Ransom Everglades. Under the direction of RE physics teacher and YREP club advisor Dr. Emily Grace, students prepared research posters and presented their findings at the YREP Summer Symposium in the Fernandez STEM Center in July.

After exploring issues at the intersection of physics, biology and environmental science, many students are continuing their research projects during the school year with the goal of sharing their work during a professional physics conference next spring. Research areas included urban mangrove physics, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, optical tweezers, biophotonics and synthetic biology
