Student emcees Rebeca Maldonado Vargas '31 and Chika Adele '31 opened the festivities in the gymnasium with a reflection on the national celebration, which runs from September 15 through October 15. "This month is about much more than remembering important dates," Vargas said. "It is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, traditions, achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities."
Adele emphasized the rich variety within these global communities, noting that traditions, languages, foods and experiences span across Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond. "Today, we’ll celebrate some of that diversity through dance, poetry, language, storytelling, and music, all shared by members of our own RE community," Adele said.
The assembly included a sixth-grade dance routine to Santana’s "Oye Como Va" and Pitbull’s "Oye." The program also offered poetry recitations from AP Spanish students that showcased how language preserves identity and history. Audience participation took center stage during an interactive vocabulary game organized by Spanish C and Portuguese A classes. Presenters shared regional terms from across different Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries, challenging students in the bleachers to guess their meanings.
Following the game, Portuguese B and C students shared creative poems inspired by the local "O, Miami" Zip Code Poetry project, structuring their lines around zip code numbers.
The assembly concluded on a musical note as Spanish B and Spanish A students led the middle school in a performance of Alvaro Soler’s "El Mismo Sol" ("The Same Sun"). Students also enjoyed hands-on cultural activities alongside parents, faculty and peers in the breezeway after. Many parents assisted with the event, organized by RE faculty member Karina Buhler.
