Eighth graders connect learning, leadership and service during capstone field trips

Ransom Everglades eighth graders took their curiosity outside the classroom for hands-on immersive experiences as part of RE’s new "Third Class" Capstone signature program. Guided by RE founder Paul Ransom’s call to put more into the world than they take from it, members of the Class of 2031 applied their skills and passions to South Florida service projects while also participating in learning adventures related to their capstone fields.
The day-long field trips on October 22 took students to a variety of locations throughout South Florida, from a senior living residence to the University of Miami to a lab on Biscayne Bay. They engaged in activities designed to promote leadership, empathy and an understanding of real-world challenges.

Students in the Digital Media and Performance Studies Capstones brought music, storytelling, conversation and companionship to senior residents at East Ridge Village at Cutler Bay; they then heard from a guest speaker on campus reinforcing how art serves others.

Students in the Environmental Science and Global Health Capstone visited the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station and conducted Biscayne Bay water quality testing aboard the Miami Waterkeeper’s Floating Classroom.

Students in the Engineering, Building & Design Capstone toured the University of Miami School of Architecture and explored cutting-edge tech in the Responsive Architecture + Design (RAD) Lab.

Students in the Business, Leadership and Ethics Capstone connected with local leaders and alumni – Kamal Daghistani '10 (Las Rocas Climbing and Fitness), Annie Lord '97 (Miami Homes for All) and RE parent José M. Roggiero (founder and CEO of Freshway Produce) – before taking on a campus beautification and landscaping project at One More Child, an organization that provides aid to children and families.

Ransom Everglades' year-long capstones foster intellectual curiosity, civic responsibility and real-world problem-solving to help students grow into active, thoughtful citizens. Head of the Middle School Pete Di Pace and many faculty joined the learning adventures.
