Biology on the Bay: Ninth graders collect and analyze water samples
Ninth-grade biology students at Ransom Everglades are taking their classroom exploration to the bay in RE's backyard, collecting and analyzing water samples to better understand how water quality affects marine life. The marine project, designed three years ago by faculty member Jesse Velazquez and expanded in collaboration with Keiffer Scott, integrates real-world field research directly into the curriculum's Properties of Water unit.
In boats piloted by dockmaster Dave Sanderson, ninth graders collected water samples throughout October at various locations including the La Brisa dock, open bay areas and waters situated directly above seagrass beds.
Utilizing specialized field equipment, including refractometers and marine research tools, students measured salinity, dissolved oxygen and PH at varying depths. After the field collection, the classes combined their datasets to synthesize findings, analyze micro-environmental differences and draw conclusions about the overall health of the waters bordering the campus.
The field work not only encourages exploration and collaboration, it also fosters scientific literacy and environmental stewardship.
