On November 7th, more than twenty members of the Ransom Everglades community gathered at the Charlotte Jane Memorial Park Cemetery on Charles Avenue in Coconut Grove to repaint and refresh the traditional Bahamian style raised graves.
In five hours the crew from RE painted 110 graves, restoring them to a gleaming white in time for the Veteran's Day parade and ceremony on November 11th. The project was spearheaded by REbuild club president, Olivia Burke ’16, and sponsored by Dr. Corinne Rhyner.
Partnering with the West Grove Homeowners and Tenants Association and the Cemetery Preservation Association, the club’s efforts helped to preserve the historic landmark. In one morning the RE volunteers completed six-months of work for the groundskeeper. Community partner Shell Lumber generously provided a discount for paint and brushes that were purchased with proceeds from the REbuild bake sale. The club would like to return to continue this important neighborhood improvement project and paint 200 additional graves sites, and is looking to partner with other West Grove churches to improve community facilities. When you are in the neighborhood, please take a moment to admire this unique cemetery and the club’s labor of love.
