Ransom Everglades' RE Combo – a six-student band – won an honorable mention award at the largest high school band competition in the world. Joon Kim ’17, Dimitri Godur ’16, Rafi Jimenez-Faisal ’17, Ryan Tie-Shue ’18, Will Glass ’16 and Luca Gonzalez-Abreu ’18 claimed the fourth-place award Feb. 6 at the Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston, Mass., a festival that annually draws over 200 high school jazz ensembles and 3,000 students from several countries.
The award marked the first time Ransom Everglades has been recognized at the prestigious competition. Joon, the band’s musical director, earned the top soloist award for the RE Combo.
“To finish this high, at this level of competition, with that number of schools is a great honor,” band director Jon Hamm said. “Everybody was truly shocked. It was unbelievable. We were ecstatic.”
Recent Grammy-nominated trumpeter Christian Scott participated in the trophy presentation and took photos with RE students. The festival recognizes ensembles based on school size in three competitive categories: large ensembles, combo ensembles and vocal jazz ensembles. The RE combo placed in the S3 division of combo ensemble behind bands from Puerto Rico, Newark, N.J., and Highland Park, Ill.
