Strong showing by Academic Team in National History Bowl
RE's Academic Team of David Lerner '16, Sean Becker '16, Ryan Guillen '17 and Chris Duyos '17 placed first in the middle bracket of varsity competition among 165 schools and some 1,000 students at the National History Bowl and Bee in Washington, D.C., narrowly failing to advance to the final round of 32 but earning a plaque of recognition for the strong performance.
Lerner, Becker, Guillen and Duyos earned 33rd place overall and the consolation of being the highest-scoring team that failed to advance to the final of the highly competitive event that challenges high schoolers with history quizzes.
"I'm extremely proud of the team, and of the over 25 students who accompanied us to Washington," said Ana Maria Szolodko, a history teacher and team coach. "I'm happy with the results, and my kids were happy. They had a terrific weekend. They loved the experience, and were very proud of being at the top of the middle tier."
RE sent more than two dozen students to to compete in the varsity and junior varsity events. Besides competing, the group enjoyed an Ethiopian meal and a special "Chocolate Seder" hosted byHarry Tandy '17.
