Boys' and girls' rowing teams shine at national championships

A four-person boys' crew team from Ransom Everglades finished third and a girls' four finished fourth at the prestigious, season-ending scholastic national championships in Nashport, Ohio, May 27-28, which drew nearly 200 high school rowing teams from across the country.
The girls' team included stroke seat, Ines Pinilla '18, three seat, Sophia Elliott '18; two seat, Gabriella Ouellette '18; bow seat, Alana Miro '17; and coxswain, Falyn Goldstein '18. The boys' quad featured stroke seat, Omry Alfi '17; three seat, Chris Carlos '17; two seat, Jordan Mishael '17; and bow seat Gabriel Echarte '18.

Ransom Everglades crew team under coach Francisco Viacava won 33 medals this season, training for the first time at MAST Academy on Virginia Key. The Raiders previously rowed on the bay behind the campus, but the rough waters were never ideal for a flat-water sport.

RE crew qualified for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Championships with its performance at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association championships in Sarasota, where Raider rowers claimed three scholastic state titles. The nationals bid was the first ever for the team.

Viacava thanked his coaching staff, coach Geronimo Fernandez and the entire team for an incredible season. He also thanked the athletic department, business office, crew parents and Head of School Penny Townsend for their support.

"I believe that Ransom Everglades has incredible potential to be a well recognized and respected crew program with the ability to achieve greater things next year," he said.
