Breakthrough Miami, founded by RE alums, featured in Herald
Breakthrough Miami, founded in 1992 by John Flickinger '74 and Doug Weiser '74, has transformed not only the lives of students, but also the talented young teachers it attracts from diverse backgrounds around the nation, the Miami Herald reported in August. Breakthrough Miami operates from a rent-free office on the Ransom Campus.
The 24-year-old program, which helps educate students from underserved communities, encourages high school seniors and college students to pursue careers in education by hiring them as Teaching Fellows during the summers, the newspaper wrote. For six weeks each summer, the Breakthrough fellows gain experience teaching a variety of subjects.
The Herald featured Isaiah Martin, who taught eighth-grade math at the RE Breakthrough site in 2015 and 2016. Originally from Brooklyn, Martin says that Breakthrough has helped him make connections across the country.
“It wasn’t just me being at a site all summer,” he said. “It put me in a good space with good staff, and I was prepared to succeed. It really gave me the validation that this is what I want to do, and I can turn those six weeks into a career now.”
