Debate team offers alternative to presidential contest
RE's speech and debate team for offered a welcome alternative to the most recent presidential debates with a well-reasoned and respectful Election Issues Debate at the Upper School Oct. 11. Kavya Chaturvedi '17, Daniel Freedline '18, Jake Weintraub '18, Brianna Kerr '19, Brezlan Malina '19 and Oliver Stern '19 took sides on key issues.
“When there is debate, there are solutions,” said Kate Hamm, Ransom Everglades speech and debate coach. The most recent presidential debate “was not a debate, it was a performance…. We understand, in order to move forward and find solutions, you must first analyze all aspects of a problem.”
The students took opposing sides on whether the United States should support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants; the Trans-Pacific Partnership; and military action against Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
RE's student body remained silent throughout, per Hamm's instructions, applauding only at the end.
