When you merge artistic talent, pumpkins and creative students, and then add a dash of mirth, you end up a first-place carved-pumpkin-person who vomits pumpkin seeds from over-indulgence on Halloween– and other entertaining creations. Welcome to Mirthfest, the 19th-annual Ransom Everglades Art League (REAL) competition that took place during school hours on Oct. 31. See a photo galleryhere.
REAL’s motto, coined by faculty advisor Astrid Dalins, is “Hilaritatem per Artem,” which translates to “mirth through art.” There was plenty of mirthful art on display in the Upper School breezeway on Halloween. Corinna Burroughs and Sabrina Alfonso of Blick Art Materials in South Miami were gracious enough to judge the contest and donate gift cards. The winners:
Best of Show and first-place seniors: "Too Much Trick or Treat," Lea Broudo '17 (the vomiting pumpkin) First-place juniors: "Dia del Muertes,"Julia Ortez '18 First-place sophomores (tie): "Day of Dead Trio," Ashlyn Cowgill '19 and "La Calavera," Sara Rahma '19 and Eli Horgan '19 First-place freshmen: "Eyeball," Milann Berg '20 Special prize: "Love Makes the World Go Around," Sophia Rose Bloomfield.
