RE releases 2017-18 school calendar

Dear RE Community,

I am pleased to share with you the academic year calendar for 2017-18. The calendar is rather straightforward and parallels for the most part the calendars of most schools locally. Students are expected back on campus on August 17 for Orientation. Winter Break and Spring Break are each a standard two weeks, as they were in 2015-16. Though many schools will have spring break the last week of March, postseason play for several sports has been scheduled for the first week of April 2018 by the Florida High School Athletic Association; thus, student athletes should check with their coaches regarding practice schedules during Spring Break. If there are twists in next year's calendar, they are minor: a faculty work day that is typically on a Monday in March is now on a Friday; Commencement, this coming May a bit earlier than usual, is back to the last Friday of May in 2018 due to the schedule of AP exams in 2018.

We hope our calendar is clear and can accommodate the needs you have as families. As always, we expect that you will use the many scheduled breaks in the class schedule to plan family trips and other obligations that would otherwise take students out of classes. At Ransom Everglades, interactions between students, their classmates, and their teachers are essential. Part of what makes us distinctive, our pedagogy based on student-centered, discussion-based classrooms, depends on regular student participation in these classroom conversations. "Making up" the learning that takes place during a class discussion is impossible, and thus missed classes create gaps in the educational experience for students that are difficult if not impossible to fill. As a faculty, we have worked in recent years to improve our own scheduling of programs to reduce the number of conflicts we create with our class schedule, and we hope that you will support this effort in your own planning.

I also want to thank the many of you who completed our Back-To-School survey.  We nearly doubled the response rate from our survey in the fall of 2014, and we appreciate the time and thoughtfulness you dedicated by sharing your ideas with us. We read and analyzed the feedback that you provided, and we have already planned some improvements to our programs as a result.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and leadership at Ransom Everglades, I wish you joyful holidays and a Happy New Year.
