Debate students score nationally and locally

Two speech and debate students earned a top-16 finish at a national policy debate tournament in Lexington, Mass., another earned a top-10 finish at a Chicago-area event and seven others scored top-five finishes at local tournaments.
The team's most recent success came from Alex Abinader '19 and Tommy Murphy '19, who went undefeated at a Catholic Forensic League event at West Broward High Jan. 21 to take first in Novice Public Forum.

A week earlier, Kavya Chaturvedi ’17 and Daniel Freedline ’18 finished as octofinalists out of 70 teams in policy debate at the Lexington Invitational, a national policy debate tournament held in Lexington, Mass., Jan. 13-16. 

In other recent events, Alexandria King '20 finished ninth in Novice Public Forum at the 2016 Glenbrooks Speech and Debate Tournament in Northbrook, Ill. And at the 4th-annual Falcon Invitational at Flanagan High, Tomas Gomez '18 earned first in Lincoln-Douglas debate; Cornelia Ehlebracht '20 got first in novice Lincoln-Douglas; the team of Keenan Cubias '19 and Pablo Benaviedes '18 scored second in Public Forum; and Zoe San Martin '20 claimed fifth in novice Lincoln-Douglas. Newcomer Ilija Wan-Simm '19 earned fifth-place honors in Varsity Dramatic Interpretation of Literature at the Colt Classic.
