Academic team preps for TV appearance with big win

RE's academic team prepared for its televised opening match of School Duel 2017 with a resounding victory at the South Florida Winter History Bee and Bowl at the Ransom Campus Jan. 14, sweeping the top three individual places and winning the top-team award. The academic team will face Florida Christian at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 on BECON-TV.
Chris Duyos '17 earned top honors in the South Florida bee; Sean Becker '17 claimed second; Alex Lerner '18 got third; and the team of Ryan Sears '18, Ryan Guillen '17, Josh Silberwasser '18 and Lerner won the history bowl.

If Becker, Duyos, Guillen and Christine Otero '17 defeat Florida Christian in the first round of the academic quiz show, the RE teammates will advance to face John Ferguson High on March 30. The 19-show competition continues through the June 1 finale.

The Davie-based BECON-TV is the communications arm of the Broward County public school district. The series will air in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties via Comcast Cable (Channel 19), DirecTV, DISH Network and AT&T U-Verse (Channel 63).

In other news, Ransom Everglades also won the South Florida junior varsity bowl Jan. 14, with Justin Lopez '19, Robert Morgan '20, Lucas Miner '20 and Alex Boehm '19 topping the field. Miner won first overall in the JV bee, and Javier Kumar '22 got third. 

An all-middle-school RE team finished third in the JV division. Andres Soto ’21, Vicky Davis ’21, Kumar and Zach Marcus ’22 posted a 6-1 record overall. In the bee individual competition, Marcus finished as one of the top six finalists along with Miner and Kumar.

The National History Bee and Bowl sponsors the annual South Florida Winter History Bee and Bowl. During the event, some competitors took qualifying exams for the U.S. Geography Olympiad and the U.S. History Bee. Andrew Lorenzen '18 qualified for the U.S. History Bee and Boehm and Morgan qualfied for the JV division.
