The Middle School math team – Amelia Fox '22, Nikhil Kumar '21, Sabrina Shipley '22 and Alexandre Van Lidth '22 – earned a state championship bid with a third-place finish in the 2017 Mathcounts Competition at Miami Dade College Feb. 26 as Kumar and Van Lidth finished in the top 10 and all 10 RE participants finished in about the top quarter of the 166 competitors countywide.
Kumar finished fourth in the individual competition and Van Lidth, eighth. Arjun Badwal '23, Justin Wong '21, Esther Gao '22,Gaurav Gajavelli '22, Ryan Berkshire '23 and Andres Soto '21 also contributed to RE's strong showing. The team of Fox, Kumar, Shipley and Van Lidth will compete at the state championship meet March 24 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., under coach Ginny Onorati.
Doral Academy Preparatory School claimed first place and the David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center, second.
