Band students experience musical immersion in New Orleans
Thirty three RE music students toured New Orleans and the bayou regions of Louisiana on the RE Band SJG NOLA Tour March 13-21. Students enjoyed the musical immersion, spending time in major French Quarter venues such as Preservation Hall, Jackson Square, the French Market and Cafe Du Monde.
They also enjoyed music aboard the Natchez Jazz Dinner Cruise on the Mississippi River, authentic Cajun food and Zydeco music at the original Mulates' Cajun restaurant, and a Jazz Brunch at the oldest courtyard restaurant in the French Quarter, Court of Two Sisters.
They ventured into bayou country, witnessing wildlife up close and personal aboard the Cajun Swamp Tour in La Place, La., and the historic plantation Oak Alley in Grenier, La. There was more history with three original local New Orleans residents as tour guides, along with visits to the National WWII War Museum and the historic Jackson Square Cabildo and Presbytere Museums.
Music Director Jon Hamm organized the trip along with the RE administration as part of the program's 20th-anniversary year. RE faculty Karen Thompson and Branly Fontaine provided experienced chaperoning. All travelers agreed they both learned many new things and enjoyed themselves a great deal.
