Boys' volleyball wins district championship

RE boys' varsity volleyball team came from behind against Southwest Miami Senior High to claim the district title – only the second in program history – in a thrilling five-set match April 27. The Raiders enter the regional playoffs on a roll, having won 18 of their last 19 games.
Led by last year's Miami-Dade County Class 5A-1A Male Athlete of the Year, Michael Colonna '17, the Raiders rebounded from a rough start – five losses in their first seven games – to put together one of their best seasons ever.

In the District 14 championship at Columbus High, the Raiders lost the first two sets before winning three straight, 26-28, 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 18-16. Colonna contributed 28 kills, 3 blocks and 9 digs; Jake Rivlin '17 collected 15 kills; Sarthak Chakravarty '17 had 8 blocks and 2 kills; Ryan Peluso '22 helped with 46 assists, four aces and 11 digs; and Riss Mendizabal '17 earned 10 service points.

RE's only other district title in boys' volleyball came in 2014; that year's team advanced to the state quarterfinals.

The team is coached by Roger Peluso and Mauricio Diaz. The Raiders' regional opener, a state play-in game, will take place at 7 p.m. May 2 on the Ransom Campus.
