Business Plan Challenge
RE teams place in Herald biz challenge
Two teams from Ransom Everglades finished among the top three in the 19th Annual Miami Herald Business Plan Challenge, which attracted 100 high school entries from across Miami-Dade County. Simon Bindefeld-Boccara '17 and Jake Pelayo '17 finished second with their plan to address restaurant food waste, and Carlos Esber '18, Austin Acosta '18 and Julian Zighelboim '18 placed third with a proposal to help veterans.
Bindefeld-Boccara and Pelayo devised an app that would allow restaurants to offer end-of-day flash deals designed to provide value to consumers and a benefit to restaurateurs while preventing the throwing out of food.
The VetNet app devised by Esber, Acosta and Zighelboim would assist veterans seeking employment assistance, a community connection or mental healthcare, and would be funded by ad revenue from the site.
The students crafted their projects under the direction of AP Macro/Microeconomics teacher Jen Nero.
The entries were judged by a panel of community experts that included executives, investors, entrepreneurs and academics. A trio of students from Gulliver Prep placed first in the competition with Smart Straws, straws designed to detected the most common date-rape drugs.
