Two RE crew teams win national champ medals

Two RE crew teams made history with podium finishes at the 2017 Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championships Regatta, which brought 500 boats from 200 schools to Camden, N.J. for the most prestigious event in high school rowing. Maia Mora ’19 and Sarah Zanzuri ’20 claimed the silver medal in the girls’ junior varsity double final; and Ada Hevia ’19, Sonja Lazovic ’18, Eliza Kirk ’19 and Laura Zaidenberg ’17 won the bronze in the girls’ lightweight varsity quad final.
All five RE teams that traveled to the Memorial Day weekend event advanced at least to the semifinals, and four made it to the finals, meaning they finished in the top six in the nation in their events.
 
Chris Carlos ’17, Andres Segrera ’19, Gabriel Echarte ’18 and Omry Alfi ’17 finished fourth in the boys’ varsity quad, and Shovan Bhatia ’18, Tomas Pinilla ’18, William Mathes ’19 and Cole Abbott '17 got fifth place in the boys’ varsity lightweight quad. Sophia Elliott '18, Ines Pinilla '18, Gabriela Ouellette '18, Alana Miro '17 and Falyn Goldstein '18 made it to the semifinals in the girls’ lightweight varsity coxed four. 

The athletes were led by RE head coach Francisco Viacava and assistants Geronimo Fernandez, Lorenzo Diaz and Sue Gallo.
