Football defeats Palmer in "Battle for the Oar"

Ransom Everglades once again prevailed in the historic "Battle for the Oar" football game against Palmer Trinity, winning 20-7 in front of a raucous crowd that filled the bleachers at Robert E. Walker Field and lined the pool deck. The Raiders have had possession of the oar since 2004.
Head of School Penny Townsend showed off the oar to Upper School students during their Sept. 5 assembly.

"Thank you for coming out," she said. "I've never seen such school spirit!"

The victory under coach Mosi Blake gave a boost to the team's seniors, who will depart with the oar ensconced at RE for another year. The seniors are: Blake Denson '18, Patrick Geraghty '18, Raleigh Goldberg '18, Gilles Gouraige '18, Will Miller '18 and Reece Ritzenthaler '18.

Philippe Covil '19 led the Raiders into the end zone twice. He compiled 101 all-purpose yards, scoring on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Goldberg and a 59-yard run. Denson, who had 81 yards on 14 carries, scored on a 19-yard touchdown run.

Robbie Moret '20 contributed 117 total yards and Jake Schwartz '19 knocked out several key third- and fourth-down runs.

On defense, the Raiders were led by Miller, who caused one fumble and had 12 tackles; Lucas Ferrer '19, who had six tackles (four for a loss) and one sack; Ritzenthaler, who had six tackles and recovered two fumbles; Gouraige, who had six tackles and one interception; and Schwartz, who had six tackles (two for a loss) and caused one fumble.

Since 1974, Ransom Everglades has won the oar 24 times, to 13 for Palmer Trinity.
