Hurricane Irma forced numerous schedule and venue changes, but all of RE’s teams – including the varsity football team, which lost the use of its field when Irma flooded it – have returned to regular practices and rescheduled games.
The football team has found a temporary practice home at nearby Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, and will use the Middle School for the rest of its home contests, including the 2017 Homecoming Game against St. Andrews – which will remain on Oct. 13, but has been moved up to 3:30 p.m.
The Alumni Tailgate scheduled for that day at the Taurus also remains on – alums are encouraged to attend the homecoming game at the Middle School, stop by the Taurus to enjoy a mini-reunion at 5:30 p.m., and then head over to the Upper School to watch the girls' volleyball team compete in the Smoothie King tournament that night.
"As strong as Irma was, the RE community is stronger," Interim Athletics Director Andy De Angulo said. "An amazing effort by coaches, athletes and faculty and staff has helped us get back to competition. We're making the most of the rest of the season."
The football team originally moved practices to the Middle School, splitting time with the Middle School team, but later shifted to Carrollton after the school offered RE the use of its field. The Raiders compete for the first time since the hurricane at 4 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 28, at the Middle School against Pinecrest Preparatory Academy. They meet Coral Shores at 3:30 p.m. at the Middle School on Fri., Oct. 6. The Raiders will close out their abbreviated regular season at Florida Christian at 7:30 p.m. Fri., Oct. 20, and at 3:30 p.m. at the Middle School against Marathon on Fri., Oct. 27.
Sailing practices resumed Mon., Sept. 25. The team's entire fleet of boats escaped the storm unscathed and two of the school's three docks are available for use, so the disruption to the program has been minimal.
The crew team has been back to work at MAST on Virginia Key. All of RE's crew boats were protected during the storm and sustained no damage. The rowing season will go on as scheduled; the team's first competition is The 53rd Head of the Charles Regatta Oct. 21-22.
Cross country and swimming were set back by cancellations, but both have returned to full training and are resuming their schedules of meets. Swimming will compete for the first time this season with a dual meet Sept. 27 against Belen, Lourdes, Riviera and Doral. Cross country heads to Lakeland for the Flrunners.com Invitational Sept. 29-30. Golf also missed events and has adjusted to a schedule that involves nine-hole instead of 18-hole tournaments because of the shortage of available courses, but RE's teams are up and running.
Girls' volleyball returned to the Anderson gymnasium as soon as school reopened despite a lack of power; generators were provided to provide electricity to the second floor of the facility. The Raiders face Carrollton at 5 p.m. Fri., Sept. 29, in their first home match since Irma.
The first floor of the gymnasium, damaged by flooding, remains out of service, but electrical repair work continues. RE students are using the locker rooms in the Ansin Aquatic Center in the meantime, and several coaches' offices have been moved to the top of the aquatic center bleachers.
