Girls' and boys' cross country teams advance to states
The RE girls' cross country team kept alive a remarkable streak by advancing to the state championships for the 40th straight year with its fifth-place finish at the Florida High School Athletics Association regional meet Nov. 3 in Coconut Creek, Fla. The boys' team also advanced by finishing third overall. The top six schools on each side advanced.
It was truly a team effort for the Raider girls, none of whom finished in the top 15 but scored an average time of 21 minutes, 56.19 seconds in the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race at the Class 2A Region 4 championship. Leading the Raiders were Fernanda Garcia Morena '21 (17th, 21:20.99); Claire Irigoyen '19 (18th, 21:24.24) and Hannah Tacher Lois '18 (21:30.73).
The boys completed the 5K in an average time of 18:23.30. James Cusack '19 posted the top finish of any Raider, finishing seventh overall among the boys with a finish in 17:21.90. A group of Raiders ran together to claim the strong team finish: Antonio Ruan '19 (26th, 18:37.26); Tomas Esber '20 (27th, 18:37.32); Chase Moralejo '18 (28th, 18:37.87); Jonathan Aker '19 (18:42.15); and Alasdair MacEachern '19 (31st, 18:43.18).
